Michael Kim of the University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA has been named the college NAECAD Player of the Month for February 2023. Hakeem Menifee, Alabama School of Math and Science, Mobile, AL, and Nick Coates, Gretna High School, Gretna, NE, have been named the high school NAECAD Players of the Month for February 2023 the NAECAD national office announced on Wednesday.
Michael Kim of the University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA has played a key role on the Overwatch team at UCI this year. Michael led his team to the UCEI Invitational Championship. Ronald Ly, UCI Assistant Director of Esports and NAECAD member had this to say about Michael, “Michael was the Most Valuable Player in the recent UCEI Invitational, leading the team to the championship!”
Hakeem Menifee of the Alabama School of Math and Science, Mobile, AL, is a junior and competes in four different games. Emma Valentine, ASMS Esports Coach and NAECAD member had this to say about Hakeem, “Hakeem (Conley) has been a key member of our team. He is the captain of three of the schools teams and maintains a 4.0 GPA.”
Nick Coates of Gretna High School, Gretna, NE, plays for the Gretna Overwatch team. Kimberly Ingraham Beck, Gretna High School Esports Coach and NAECAD member, had this to say about Nick, “is the captain of our Varsity Overwatch team, he leads by example, always stays positive, embodies the 3 C's of a captain - Caring, Courageous, and Consistent. His communication skills with his team are superb allowing them to be very coordinated.”
This coveted award recognizes individuals for a balance of athletic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship. While elite performance in the game is important, this award is aimed at recognizing the overall impact the individual has made. Example characteristics include:
Each month, players are nominated by NAECAD members and selected for the award by NAECAD. One Player of the Month will be recognized each month (September – April) at the college and high school levels.
The Player of the Month recipients are eligible for nomination of the Player of the Year award. The individual receiving the Player of the Year award will be recognized at the NAECAD National Convention each year. The individuals receiving the Player of the Month award will be recognized at the NAECAD National Convention each year. Student athletes nominated for the Player of the Month award will be eligible for nomination of All American status. Student athletes receiving the most votes will be recognized at both the high school and the university levels for All-American status. The individuals receiving All-American status will be recognized each year at the NAECAD National Convention.
